TIPS ON MOVING

MOVING DOESN’T HAVE TO BE A HEADACHE IF YOU:
  • Write a list of things you need to do - be organised.
  • Start packing A.S.A.P - don’t wait until the last minute.
  • Make sure you are packed and ready to go on moving day.
  • Use removal cartons & heavy duty plastic bags for packing.
  • All your goods should be in cartons with plenty of packing & label the cartons.
  • Try to keep the weight of cartons to 20 kilograms.
  • Use packing tape to seal your cartons - don’t use masking tape.
  • Aquariums must be completely empty to move them.
  • Wardrobes & drawers should be empty to move them.
  • Get rid of unwanted furniture & items A.S.A.P.
  • Microwaves - take out the glass plate.
  • Fridge & freezer - don’t leave food in them.
  • Lawnmowers & whippersnippers - drain the fuel & clean them.
  • LPG bottles & hazardous materials cannot go in the truck by law.
  • Don’t water pot plants prior to moving & wash the soil off garden tools. Laws apply for plants going interstate - check with the appropriate departments.
  • If your goods are going into storage, you need lots of material to cover your furniture & remove batteries from appliances.
  • Make sure all legal paperwork is in order prior to moving day.
  • It is very unwise to move on settlement day.
  • Keep jewellery, passports & other valuables with you.
  • Return anything borrowed from your neighbours.
  • Notify change of address to your post office, bank, etc.
  • Keep pets & kids out of the way on moving day.
  • Keep clear - entrance ways, interior corridors & pathways. Cut back tree branches, vines and other plants if they are in the way.
NOTE: The government changed the insurance laws in 2004. Call the Australian Furniture Removers Association for clarification about the new insurance laws on 1800 671 806 or go to www.afra.com.au. Insurance is NOT FREE! If you want insurance, you have to pay for it. Moving companies are not required to provide any kind of insurance.
